A beam is a horizontal, or nearly horizontal, structural member that is capable of withstanding load primarily by resisting bending. It can also simply be an architectural element which is non-load bearing.
Spandrel
A spandrel is a tall beam placed on the facade of a building. One tall side is usually finished to provide the exterior of the building. Can be used to support joists or slab elements on its interior side.
